There’s a huge focus on the proper ways to apply makeup and the best beauty products out there – but a real focus should always be on the essential methods to better care for your skin, too. A lot of people neglect an adequate skincare routine, either through lack of knowledge, lack of time or a preference for better makeup compared to skincare itself.

Here are 4 tips if you’re looking to pay more attention to caring for your skin from now on.

1. Make Time for Skincare

Sparing extra time for your routine is going to take effort, but it’s worth it. If you usually roll out of bed as late as possible and rush around in the morning, as well as having a quick wash before bedtime whilst you’re already half asleep, you have no hope of caring for your skin efficiently.

Try, therefore, to get out of bed early enough to leave you with enough time for a skincare routine, and try and prepare your skin for bed early in the evening instead of right before you’re ready to sleep.

Items such as moisturizers need time to sink into your skin before you apply any makeup or other products, so making sure you have enough time for that – especially in the morning – is essential.

2. Apply Your Products in the Right Order

To make sure that every skincare item is working as it should, make sure you understand the order you’re supposed to use products on your face and skin.

The order should be as follows:

  1. Makeup Remover (only in the evenings)
  2. Cleanser
  3. Toner
  4. Any tailored treatment products, such as acne-treatment
  5. Moisturizer
  6. Face Oil
  7. Foundation (if putting on makeup)

If you often wear women’s perfume, it may be a good idea to get unscented products so that the scents don’t clash or overwhelm each other.

3. Protect Your Skin

It’s also important to factor in external problems for your skin such as harsh weather. The focus of this is protecting your skin against harmful UV rays. You should therefore factor sun lotion into your routine, too, during those sunny days. You may be able to find foundation and skincare products which have a UV protection rating, and this is usually detailed on the bottle.

For colder weather where your skin has a risk of drying out or becoming chapped when exposed to harsh wind or a drop in temperatures, products such as moisturizers and lip balms are a must.

4. Invest More in Better Skincare Products

If most of your beauty budget is usually spent on expensive makeup in order to mask your skin blemishes, such as heavy foundations and concealers, then you may want to consider switching your priorities. Spending less on makeup – and, indeed, wearing less makeup to avoid the clogging of your pores – which means you have more money to invest in high-quality skincare products that will eventually eliminate the need for heavy cover-up products by giving you a glowing complexion.
